Newcastle United fans have taken to social media to react to the performance of powerhouse striker Aleksandar Mitrovic during his appearance for Serbia in their World Cup clash against Costa Rica.
The 23-year-old was chosen to lead the line for his country at the Samara Stadium, which is in the south west of Russia, in the first outing for both countries in their Group E encounter.
Mitrovic struggled at Newcastle during the first half of last season, managing to make just seven appearances across all competitions, before he was shipped out on loan to Championship side Fulham, firing the Cottagers to the Premier League via the play off final with 12 goals in 20 outings in England’s second tier.
His fine form earned him the call up to the national side, having made picked up 37 caps and scored 16 goals, and there were a number of Newcastle fans watching on as he impressed against the south American side, including an impressive overhead kick which saw him shoot straight at the keeper after beating the offside trap from Costa Rica.
The reactions from the Toon Army ranged from them revealing their hopes that he stays at St James’ Park next season, as well as Mike Ashley rubbing his hands together seeing his asset impress.
